Opera in Selsey  you bet !!

Picture
Arts Dream Selsey is pleased to offer something ‘new and fresh ‘ for  Selsey Audiences. Opera ! Not stiff and starchy though as you might have seen on the television that lasts for ever; but fun and dynamic  performed by a bunch of charismatic youngsters, with excellent performing skills and outstanding voices.

City Wall Productions are a Chichester-based boutique opera and music recital company, offering opportunities for young professional singers and orchestral players to perform in a national context, and this is not your ordinary Purcell Opera. City Wall Productions have adapted the piece and given it a deliciously fresh treatment.

"The Real Dido" It is the beginning of the 20th Century and the onset of war is looming. As the nightlife of London comes out to play, a fatalistic affair of the heart ignites, as all  the city around them burns. The revolutionary war weapons of the 1941 Blitzkreig ferociously burst the safe yet bleak bubble within which we find Dido, Aeneas, Belinda and the staff and patrons of Club Carthage, a grimy London music hall in the midst of a city ablaze with war’

Dido and Aeneas   is an opera in a prologue and three acts, written by the English Baroque composer Henry Purcell with a libretto by Nahum Tate.  It recounts the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero Aeneas, and her despair when he abandons her. A monumental work in Baroque opera, Dido and Aeneas is remembered as one of Purcell's foremost theatrical works, with Dido’s Lament being one of the most outstanding   icon pieces of music ever written. When you here it you will remember it!
